On July 7, the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) have named Chiles’ Stephanie Holmes and Ryland Sun as 2016-17 NISCA/Speedo High School Swimming All-Americans. Holmes, a rising senior, earned her second All-American award by swimming a 4:49.63 in the Finals of the 500 Freestyle at the FHSAA Class 3A Swimming and Diving Championships where she placed second. Rising junior Ryland Sun achieved All-American status in the 100 Butterfly at the State Championship Meet by swimming a 49.73 on his way to a fifth place finish. Chiles coach Gerry Norris has said that “Stephanie and Ryland have shown that you can do it all….They have learned time management and self-discipline to come out on top both Academically and Competitively”.
Both Holmes and Sun are Tallahassee Democrat 2016 co-Big Bend Girls and Boys Swimmers of the Year, respectively. Furthermore, Stephanie has committed to swim at FSU in 2018.
NISCA also announced that the Chiles’ Girls and Boys Swimming and Diving Teams earned NISCA/SwimOutlet.com Scholar Team Awards. Both teams received a Silver Award with the Girls’ achieving a cumulative 3.613 GPA and the Boys’ a 3.506 GPA. “This is an amazing accomplishment for these young high school student-athletes” says Chiles’ Coach Gerry Norris. “During the school year they practice from 5:30-6:30 in the morning, then go to school, and after school come back to the pool and practice for another couple of hours. The boys won the state championship last year and the girls placed third. It takes a special person to manage academics and athletics at the highest levels.” This is the second consecutive year that Chiles’ Swimming and Diving Teams have earned Scholar Team Awards.
